Mana Kirishima Mana's profiles.

Lovely Mana Kirishima was immediately attracted to Shinji the first time she ever met him, and quickly became his girlfriend. A pilot of a robot built by another military branch, she was sent to NERV to study (spy on) the Eva pilots and get information on the Eva piloting system. She first shows up at Shinji's school, gets introduced to the class, and immediately takes a seat next to Shinji. Mana calls him kawaii (cute) and sticks to him like glue for the rest of the day. She even follows him to NERV, introducing herself to Asuka, Rei, and Misato as well.

Wait a minute! You say you've studied all 26 Evangelion TV series episodes all the way through to the End of Evangelion, and you can't even remember seeing Shinji's girl friend once!

Well, no wonder you're confused right about now. Mana Kirishima is the Girlfriend of Steel. She is a pilot from an alternative military giant mecha weapons system. But she doesn't appear in any of the videos. Mana appears in the now out of production Neon Genesis Evangelion video game, called "Girlfriend of Steel", or alternatively, "Iron Maiden". The games were produced for the Playstation, and the Sega Saturn.

In the game Mana is a spy from the military trying to find out how NERV pilots it's Eva units. And there's a sub-plot of two other male pilots from the same program who have stolen their mechas, so Mana is under the gun to prove her loyalty to the program. But once she meets Shinji, she genuinely seems to like him, which gives her additional conflicts to deal with.

I think it is a great idea for Shinji to have a girl who really digs him. Who likes all this existential nihilism that Shinji puts himself through anyway...I mean, besides Gainax and a few million Japanese fans? Personally I always sided with Asuka when she wanted to slap some sense into his head.

Of course, you can't have an Evangelion story with Shinji having a happy ending can you? In the game, Shinji and Mana get to share one happy date. Then one of the pilots who escaped from the military program shows up wounded, and gets whisked away by the government. Everyone gets caught up in a conspiracy involving rogue pilots from this alternative military mecha system. Mana ends up disappearing at the end. Either she escapes with the other pilot, or she gets fried by an N2 bomb. Shinji almost shares her fate, except Asuka hauls his rear out of the frying pan at the last minute.

Anyway, the game has been out of production for awhile, but used copies pop up from time to time for sale. There's also a lite version of the game that someone produced as a computer executable file (in English). It basically is a series of still pictures that tell stories, with a few video clips, and some decision points where you can explore various story options. Some of the artwork was done as cels specially for the game. The Neon Genesis Evangelion Corporation had it in their games section at one time. That's where I got this copy. But the last time I checked, their games download section was disabled. The original author of this version of the game seems to have information on his web site at Tenku No Girlfriend Online web site. But the download section there also seemed to be disabled.

I have purchased expanded web space hosting and have posted it here. This is an 87 megabyte zip file! Took me an hour to upload the thing with a cable modem. If all you have is a dial-up 56K connection, don't even waste your time! Also, my account only allows a max of 2 gigabytes a day and 30 gigabytes a month for downloading. If the downloads exceed that, then the account won't be accessible for the rest of the day (or month as the case may be). So if you have local friends that want it, share it with them on a disk and save my bandwidth, please!

The game is organized in the zip file by directories. When you unzip it, place it in your program files directory under the directory name "Tenku No Girlfriend". I've had several people emailing me that they couldn't get it to run, and putting it in the Program Files directory on the C drive seemed to solve the problem. You can use the Run command off of your Start page to go to this directory, find the 85 meg executable file, and run it from there. This file first complains about missing some .mov file. After you click past that deficiency, you can run it from there. Good luck and have fun! And take note: this is not the original game! It is someone's created game using pictures from the original game and apparently some evangelion video clips. It is still fun to see what some of the original game looked like.

I just bought the commercial game off of eBay from a guy in Japan. It is interesting to see how it plays. It is mostly a choose your own adventure kind of story with endings that vary depending on your choices. But it is all in Japanese, so I can't understand the dialogue or most of the choices. I find myself wandering around a lot instead, kind of taking in the scenary of a foreign country. I have the game running on a U.S. model Sega Saturn, equipped with an Action/Replay card, which allows the play of import games. It is my understanding that it won't play in a regular Sega Saturn, but I haven't tried it for myself.

For a good summary of the actual commercial game, check out TDD's Girlfriend of Steel Page

Gainax has released an Iron Maiden II game in Japan, to coincide with the Evangelion Revival Project! (see my main Evangelion page for details - and more details to come as they become available).

Girlfriend of Steel 2

Gainax has released a sequel to the Girlfriend of Steel game in Japan. Curiously it is called "Girlfriend of Steel 2". I don't know if Mana will appear anywhere in it but since it is a follow-up of the original Girlfriend of Steel game, I will include it on this page for now. In the future I may move it to it's own page. There's a new manga coming out that is associated with it. Sadamoto, who drew the original manga, is not the artist in this new series. The series is currently appearing in Asuka magazine in Japan. It is currently not commercially available in English.

This is an alternate universe manga devoted to the characters and the video game. It is based around a fantasy that Shinji has in the final two TV episodes (the infamous TV episodes #25 & 26). In this fantasy, Shinji flashes on what it would have been like to have had a normal life with all of his friends that he met at NERV, with them all leading normal lives and not piloting monstrously large Eva units against the gigantic "angels".

In this universe, all of Shinji's adventures with the Evas were just a very strange dream. And all of his friends are there, attending school with him, including Kaouru. And then there's this matter of a very strange, new tranfer student named Rei Ayanami....
